Statistics of the month: Number of Finnish studying for a degree abroad has doubled in the last ten years

The number of Finnish degree students abroad has doubled in the last ten years. In 2015-2106 more than 8 000 Finnish students studied for a degree in a higher education institution abroad. This corresponds to the student number in an average-sized university or university of applied sciences in Finland.

Britain is still the most popular target country with ca 25 per cent of the Finnish degree students abroad. Sweden has, however, gradually increased its popularity and is almost as popular as Britain. Among the first-year students Sweden is more popular than Britain.

A further study shedding light on the motivations to study abroad, experiences and willingness to return to Finland after completion of their studies will be published in summer 2017.
