After the test day, the YKI tests are assessed. The assessment takes approximately 2 months. Once the assessment is complete, you will receive a certificate for the YKI test. You can use the YKI certificate to prove your language proficiency to an educational institution, employer or authority, for example.

YKI tests consist of four subtests: speaking, listening comprehension, writing and reading comprehension.

You get a separate grade, i.e. a proficiency level assessment, for each subtest in the YKI test.

You have passed the subtest if your assessment is

  • 1 or 2 (for a basic level test)
  • 3 or 4 (for an intermediate level test)
  • 5 or 6 (for an advanced level test).

You have not met the requirements for the skill level if your assessment is

  • below 1 (for a basic level test)
  • below 3 (for an intermediate level test)
  • below 5 (for an advanced level test).

The grades below 1, below 3 or below 5 mean that you did not have the required skills for the chosen level of the YKI test. This result only applies to a specific subtest. It does not mean that the whole test has been rejected.

You will only receive a grade for the level of the test that you took.

 

What is the YKI test result good for?

For example, educational institutions, employers and public authorities may ask you to prove your language skills with a YKI certificate. The Finnish National Agency for Education does not decide what the results of the YKI test can be used for.

If someone asks you for a YKI certificate, ask them directly if your test result is sufficient. You can also ask whether they accept a single YKI test or several YKI tests together. 

 

YKI test results in My Studyinfo

If you logged in using Suomi.fi e-Identification when registering for the YKI test, you can view your YKI test results in My Studyinfo:

  1. Log in to My Studyinfo.
  2. Select My completed studies.
  3. Open the details of the YKI test under the National Certificate of Language Proficiency section. If you have taken the YKI test more than once, please make sure that you open the details of the correct test date.  
  4. View the results of the YKI test.

If you used email authentication when registering, you cannot view your YKI test results in My Studyinfo.

If your test date was before May 2019, you cannot view your YKI test results in My Studyinfo.

You will get your YKI certificate around 2 months after the test date.

YKI tests are organised in many different languages and at various skill levels around Finland. A large number of people take these tests. This is why it takes some time before you get your certificate. You should remember this when you are selecting a test date.

You can get a paper or digital version of your YKI certificate. 

  • If you take the YKI test on or after 1 April 2026, you can get a digital YKI certificate.
  • If you took the YKI test before 31 March 2026, a printed certificate will be sent to you by post. You cannot receive a digital YKI certificate.

 

Information about the digital YKI certificate

 You can access the certificate in the My Studyinfo service, provided that both of the following conditions are met:  

  1. You provided your Finnish personal identity code on the registration form. 
  1. You have activated the Suomi.fi Messages service. 

Once the certificate is ready in My Studyinfo, the Finnish National Agency for Education will send you a message in the Suomi.fi service. 

If you have not activated Suomi.fi Messages by the time your certificate is ready, the certificate will be sent to you by post.

How to download a digital YKI certificate in My Studyinfo:

  1. Log in to My Studyinfo.  
  2. Select My completed studies.  
  3. Open the details of the YKI test under the National Certificate of Language Proficiency section. If you have taken the YKI test more than once, please make sure that you open the details of the correct test date.   
  4. Download the YKI certificate in Finnish, Swedish or English.

Information about the printed YKI certificates

If you do not have a Finnish personal identity code or you have not activated Suomi.fi Messages, a printed YKI certificate will be sent to you by post.

Your YKI certificate will be sent by post to the address that you provided when you registered for the test.

YKI certificates sent by mail:

  • If you participated in the YKI test on April 11, 2026, your certificate were mailed on June 26, 2026.
  • If you participated in the YKI test on April 25, 2026, your certificate were mailed on June 26, 2026.
  • If you participated in the YKI test on May 23, 2026, your certificate were mailed on June 26, 2026.

Please note that it can take up to 1-2 weeks for you to receive your certificate. We do not share test results over the phone or via e-mail.

 

Have you moved? 

If you do not have a Finnish personal identity code or do not use Suomi.fi Messages, you will receive a paper YKI certificate by post. The certificate will be sent to the address that you gave when you registered for the YKI test. 

If your address changes, you will need to edit your contact information in My Studyinfo: 

  1. Open the registration confirmation email. The email was sent from noreply [at] opintopolku.fi when you registered for the YKI test. 
  2. Find the link in the email that allows you to view the details of your registration. 
  3. Open the link. 
  4. Edit your contact information.

Please note! If your registration details say Assessment complete, your certificate has already been posted.
 

 

Do you need a new YKI certificate?

If you took the YKI test on or after 1 April 2026, you may have a digital certificate. You can re-download your digital YKI certificate from the My Studyinfo service.

Log in to My Studyinfo

If you took the YKI test on or after 1 April 2026, you can also order a new certificate by email. Please send your message to the following address: kielitutkinnot [at] oph.fi. The certificate costs €55.60–65.60 and will be sent to you by post.

If you took the YKI test on or before 31 March 2026, you can order a new certificate by email. Please send your message to the following address: yki-info [at] jyu.fi. The certificate costs €30 and will be sent to you by post.

 

How long will the certificate be valid? 

Your YKI certificate will never expire. You should remember, however, that your language skills will get worse if you do not use the language. For this reason, an employer may test your language skills if, for example, you apply for a new job and give an old certificate to the employer. The employer may want to interview you, or ask you to re-take the YKI test.

The digital YKI certificate has an electronic seal that indicates that it is genuine. When you download the certificate, its seal is valid for one year. You can download the certificate again whenever you want. When you do, the certificate will have a new seal.

The persons assessing the YKI tests are experts who have been trained in testing language skills. Most of them are teachers of the language in question. YKI test performances are assessed according to the assessment criteria.

The Finnish National Agency for Education works together with the Centre for Applied Language Studies (CALS), which is a research unit in the University of Jyväskylä. CALS trains assessors and supervises the assessors' work. CALS ensures that the assessment of YKI tests is consistent.

Once your YKI test has been assessed, the Finnish National Agency for Education will automatically issue you a YKI certificate.

If you are not satisfied with the assessment of your YKI test, you can submit a request for an administrative review. Submitting a request for an administrative review means that your YKI test will be reassessed.

In the reassessment, your test answers will be evaluated again. The reassessment will be conducted by different assessors than those who assessed your YKI test the first time. 

The reassessment only concerns your YKI test answers. It will not take into account any other factors that may have affected the test results.

The reassessment fee is 108 euros per subtest. The fee must be paid when you submit your request for a reassessment.

The average processing time for reassessment requests is approximately three months.

Once the reassessment is completed, the decision on the results will be sent to you by email.

The fee will be refunded if the reassessment changes the assessment of the subtest.

The decision on reassessment may not be appealed.

 

Statistics on reassessments  

The statistics show that the work quality of qualified and trained assessors is consistent. The reassessment rarely changes the grade of a test. 

  • In 2018, 110 requests for reassessment were made. The reassessment changed the grade of a subtest in 3 cases.
  • In 2019, 179 requests for reassessment were made. The reassessment changed the grade of a subtest in 4 cases.
  • In 2020, 207 requests for reassessment were made. The reassessment changed the grade for a subtest in 5 cases.
  • In 2021, 253 requests for reassessment were made. The reassessment changed the grade for a subtest in 5 cases.
  • In 2022, 216 requests for reassessment were made. The reassessment changed the grade for a subtest in 3 cases.
  • In 2023, 200 requests for reassessment were made. The reassessment changed the grade for a subtest in 11 cases.
  • In 2024, 130 requests for reassessment were made. The reassessment changed the grade for a subtest in 7 cases.
  • In 2025, 128 requests for reassessment were made. The reassessment changed the grade for a subtest in 7 cases.

 

How to request and pay for a reassessment 

If you are not satisfied with the assessment of your YKI test, you have two options:  

  1. Request a reassessment on the YKI test registration page. You have 30 days to request a reassessment. The time starts when you are notified that your certificate is ready.   

  1. Ask for information on how the assessment criteria were applied to your test. This means requesting information on how your YKI test was assessed. You have 14 days to request information on the assessment criteria. The time starts when you are notified that your certificate is ready. Submit your request for information on the assessment criteria to yki-info [at] jyu.fi.  

    Asking for information on the assessment criteria will not change the assessment of your YKI test, but you can also ask for a reassessment of your YKI test. You have 14 days to request a reassessment. The time starts when you receive the requested information on the assessment criteria.
