Crafts (Crafts and Design Education) is common school subject to all pupils in primary and lower secondary education (Basic Education Law 11§) from the 1st grade to the end of 7th grade.

In crafts, Pupils study both technical work and textile work during handicraft classes. These two different ways of working deal with a great many different materials and pupils are taught to choose the right ways of working in relation to their own plans. For example, if the pupil wants to make a garment, they chooses the ways of working in textile work and textile technologies. Correspondingly, when pupils are working with wood and metal, they select technical work methods and technic technologies. The pupil learns many different techniques, handling different materials to implement the entire craft process.

Basic facts about lesson hours in crafts:

  • Approx. 2h/week (depending on education provider and the local curriculum)
  • 8th and 9th grades, the handicraft is taught as an optional subject
    • Pupils can choose approx. 1–6h/week (depending on education provider and student’s choises)
      • Optional handicraft classes (continuum to a handicraft common to all)
      • Optional advanced subjects related to different handicraft technologies. (More defined contents like clothing, electronics, robotics, 3D printing, knitting, felting, fabric dyeing, computer aided technologies (CNC, laser)
      • Optional applied studies related to different handicraft technologies. (For example 
        an entity formed from two different subjects such as Handicraft and Biolgy = “Fishing with self-made wobblers”)

The final assesment is carried out in either grade 7, 8 or 9, depending on student´s choices.
