Participants with special needs

You may request special arrangements for completing the language proficiency test, if you have for example dyslexia, hearing or visual impairments or for other certified serious health reasons.

If you request special arrangements, you must provide an official certificate of your special need, such as a doctor’s certificate, when you register. In addition to a doctor, a certificate can also be issued by a special needs teacher or a psychologist. A doctor can certify an illness or impairment, but an informed psychologist or special needs teacher must issue the certificate of dyslexia. It should be clear from the statement or certificate how your special need affects your ability to take the test. Note: medical records (epicrises) are not accepted. If you request special arrangements, you must have a certificate from the abovementioned experts.

Certificates and expert statements cannot be older than 2 years.

Participants with special needs take the same test as other participants. If necessary, special arrangements may consist of for example extra time for completing assignments, exemption from using the optical form and the possibility of taking the test in a separate space, on a computer or using large print texts.

Despite the special arrangements, the performance is assessed according to the criteria used for all language proficiency tests. The underlying principle for special arrangements is that the participant, despite their special needs, is guaranteed an opportunity to show their language skills that is as equal as possible in the test situation.

Participants who use sign language may be exempt from the speaking and listening comprehension subtests.

Requesting special arrangements

If you need special arrangements to take the test, you should:

  • register for the test and pay the test fee via the payment link in your email
  • immediately contact the test centre and deliver the following documents to two different locations:

  1. The form for requesting special arrangements
  • print the form from the Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI) website or ask for one from the test centre
  • fill in the form and deliver it during the registration period to the test centre where you will take the test

TO THE University of Jyväskylä

  1. Expert statement about the special arrangements (for example a doctor’s certificate)
  • the certificate from a doctor, special needs teacher or psychologist must contain the following information:
  • your reasons for requesting special needs arrangements
  • how your special need affects your ability to take the test
  • the special arrangements you require
  • send the certificate by mail to the University of Jyväskylä, Centre for Applied Language Studies (Soveltavan kielentutkimuksen keskus), with the following information:

Jyväskylän yliopisto
Soveltavan kielentutkimuksen keskus (SOLKI)
Yleiset kielitutkinnot
Sirkka-Leena Salo (Sari Ahola)
PL 35
40014 JYVÄSKYLÄN YLIOPISTO

Note: The statement about the special arrangements is a confidential document, which cannot be processed at the test location. You must send the certificate by mail to the University of Jyväskylä yourself. The university decides if your request for special arrangements is approved. The test centre will contact you about the decision and give further instructions, if necessary.

Your request must be dated during the registration period. Late or incomplete requests will not be processed.
