Mother tongue and literature is a multidisciplinary subject involving theoretical, practical and cultural dimensions.
The task of mother tongue and literature is to improve the students’ language proficiency, interaction skills, and multiliteracy. The studies strengthen the students’ interest in language, literature, and other forms of culture as well as increase their awareness of their skills as communicators and language users. The studies support the development of their language awareness, cultural knowledge and ability, and learning in all subjects. The objective is that the students learn knowledge and skills which support their further studies and active citizenship (2019 NCC).
Mother tongue and literature as a subject
Mother tongue and literature has 12 syllabi, which have specific tasks but share the above task of the subject.
The 12 mother tongue and literature syllabi are:
- syllabus in Finnish language and literature,
- syllabus in Swedish language and literature,
- syllabus in Sámi language and literature,
- syllabus in Roma language and literature,
- syllabus in sign language and literature,
- syllabus in Finnish as a second language and literature,
- syllabus in Swedish as a second language and literature,
- syllabus in Finnish for Sámi speakers,
- syllabus in Swedish for Sámi speakers,
- syllabus in Finnish for sing language users,
- syllabus in Swedish for sign language users,
- and syllabus in a student’s other mother tongue and literature.
In general upper secondary, compulsory credits for mother tongue and literature are 12 cr and optional 6 cr.
