The intended use of the scholarship during to state of emergency coursed by the Russia's war against Ukaraine is as follows:

The Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI) awards scholarships for students whose native tongue is one of the Finno-Ugric languages spoken in Russia or who have a command similar to a native speaker and have a Finno-Ugric family background.

Students of Russian or Belarussian universities cannot get scholarships.

The Master's level kindred peoples scholarship is intended for persons

  • whose native tongue is one of the Finno-Ugric languages spoken in Russia or who have a command similar to a native speaker and have a Finno-Ugric family background
  • and are meritorious students who study or will start the Master's level studies in a Finnish university
  • or study on a Master's level at a university outside Finland (not in Russia or Belarussia)
  • and who study Finno-Ugric languages and/or cultures

The scholarship period is for a maximum of six months. You can also apply for the grant for two or more shorter periods if this is more appropriate for your final thesis, as long as the total number of months does not exceed six.

The scholarship amount is € 1000/month.

There is no separate grant for travel costs. You should arrange and pay for your accommodation yourself.

You can apply for a Master's level scholarship for kindred peoples if

  • you have a Finno-Ugric family background and you speak one of the Finno-Ugric languages spoken in Russia as a native tongue or you have a command similar to a native speaker
  • and you study or you are going to study on a Master's level at a Finnish  university 
  • or you study on a Master's level in a university outside Finland (not in Russia or Belarussia)
  • and you study/will study Finno-Ugric languages and/or cultures of Russia

N.B. Before applying for the scholarship, 1) be in contact with a Finnish university and find out how you can verify that you have a Finno-Ugric family background and you speak one of the Finno-Ugric languages spoken in Russia as a native tongue or you have a command similar to a native speaker. 

and 2) make arrangements with a Finnish university to make sure that you are able to complete your planned studies there. Your application should include the name of the Finnish host university, the teaching unit hosting you, and the name of a contact person there.

There are two application deadlines per year:

  • by 31 March for the autumn term 
  • by 31 August for the spring term

Annexes to application

  • CV
  • Transcript of study records
  • study/research plan (the most important annex)
  • a letter of recommendation from a Finnish language teacher in your home university, including an assessment of your proficiency in Finnish, and
  • a letter of acceptance from the Finnish host university.

We need your personal information for the scholarship selection process only. The information will only be given to the host university, nobody else.
