Lifelong learning has become increasingly important as society is changing and evolving. Guidance related to lifelong learning helps individuals to identify their abilities, competence and interests in the different stages of their life. Guidance also supports them in making decisions on their education and career and in managing their life path.

Lifelong guidance is provided by information, guidance and counselling services in education, employment and the youth sector. The work is guided by the Government's Lifelong Guidance Strategy for 2020-2023.

Guidance and counselling in basic education
A key task of guidance and counselling is to support the pupil’s growth and development. The guidance forms a continuum that extends throughout the pupil’s years in basic education to subsequent studies.

The purpose of guidance and counselling is to support students in their studies during general upper secondary education and ensure that they acquire the knowledge and skills required for moving on to further studies and to the world of work.
