Bachelor's and Master's level students of Finnish language from universities outside Finland can apply for a grant from the Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI). Grants are available for studies in a Finnish university for a maximum of 6 months at both levels.

Students can continue to apply for a Finnish language grant regardless of citizenship.

The grants to Bachelor's and Master's level students of Finnish are intended

  • for the later stages of your Bachelor's or Master’s level studies of Finnish language and culture in a Finnish university or
  • for gathering material in Finland for your Bachelor's or Master’s thesis (that you do for your home university).

The grant period is for a maximum of six months for both levels. You can also apply for the grant for two or more shorter periods if this is more appropriate for your final thesis, as long as the total number of months does not exceed six.

If a part of the grant period is during a time when there is no tuition at the university and teachers are not available, please let us know how you plan to use that time for your Master’s studies.

The amount of the grant is €1000/month.

There is no separate grant for travel costs. You should arrange and pay for your accommodation yourself.

You can apply for a grant for Bachelor's or Master's students of Finnish if

  • you study Finnish language and culture in a university outside Finland, and
  • you are at final stages of your Bachelor's or Master’s studies, or
  • you are gathering material for your Bachelor's or Master’s thesis in your home university.

Before applying for the grant, make arrangements with a Finnish university to make sure that you are able to complete your planned studies there. Your application should include the name of the Finnish host university, the teaching unit hosting you, and the name of a contact person there.

The application period is ongoing, but please submit your application as soon as possible, however no later than two months before the planned start of the grant period.

Annexes to application

  • CV
  • Transcript of study records
  • study/research plan (the most important annex)
  • a letter of recommendation from a Finnish language teacher in your home university, including an assessment of your proficiency in Finnish, and
  • a letter of acceptance from the Finnish host university.

Please write you application and annexes in Finnish. Transcript of study records can be in English.

We need your personal information for the scholarship selection process only. The information will only be given to the host university, nobody else.

Please note! You cannot receive the EDUFI grant at the same time as you are receiving an Erasmus grant.

At the end of the grant period, you should send a free-form report to the contact person for the programme at EDUFI. Please detail the main results of the grant period in your report.
