Improving the quality of education through focusing on teachers
The Regional Teachers Initiative for Africa (RTIA) supports teacher education and teacher professional development in Sub-Saharan Africa. EDUFI implements the initiative together with France (Expertise France), Belgium (Enabel, VVOB, APEFE), UNESCO and the African Union. The RTIA is financed by the European Commission, placing teachers at the heart of the Global Gateway strategy's education investment priorities. The total budget is €100 million for six years (2024-2030).
EDUFI coordinates the research funding and knowledge management components
EDUFI coordinates the research funding and knowledge management components of the initiative. The knowledge management component focuses on supporting knowledge production, learning and evidence-based decisions across the initiative, while also organising events to facilitate knowledge exchange and coordination between different actors. EDUFI also organises demand-driven technical assistance for Ministries of Education together with Expertise France and Enabel. The total budget for EDUFI coordinated activities is €13 million for the first three years (2024-2027).
Collaboration opportunities for different actors
Civil society organisations, higher education institutions, research centres and public sector actors from Europe and Africa can participate in the calls for proposals organised under the initiative. The first calls for proposals for public sector actors and organisations took place in June-July 2024. The call focusing on research funding is launched in autumn 2024. Furthermore, experts from Africa and Europe can contribute to implementing the initiative: for example, through providing technical assistance.
