Regional Teachers Initiative for Africa

The EU funded Regional Teachers Initiative for Africa (RTIA) supports teacher education, professional development and working conditions across Sub-Saharan Africa. EDUFI implements the initiative together with Expertise France, Enabel, VVOB, APEFE, UNESCO and the African Union.

Last week, the Regional Teachers Initiative for Africa team was in Liberia to co-develop the second Country Action Plan in the initiative, following the request from Liberia. With the lead of Her Excellency the Minister of Education Ms. Jarso Maley Jallah and her assistant ministers, the team had inspiring, lively and productive working sessions with relevant ministry officials and a wide range of local and international education partners. Our Facility team also had the opportunity to engage in valuable discussions with master trainers and teacher students when visiting the Kakata Rural Teacher Training Institute.

Technical cooperation for teacher training curriculum development, teacher training institutes, professional development and teacher working conditions

The Ministry of Education team and our Facility team explored opportunities for technical cooperation in several areas, such as 1) teacher training curricula, with a focus on digital skills, green skills and mental health, 2) capacity development of national teacher training institutes, 3) continuous professional development for teachers and school leaders, and 4) teacher recruitment, deployment, retention and retirement processes.

Cooperation between different education actors is key to ensuring the complementarity and added value of the Facility support in Liberia. The Facility team is grateful to the Ministry of Education, local education providers and teacher associations, as well as the EU Delegation in Liberia, UNICEF, the World Bank and the Global Partnership for Education for their generous time and valuable contribution.
