Finnish education exports continued to grow

Current issues
A survey addressed at member companies and organisations of Education Finland, a programme that operates in conjunction with the Finnish National Agency for Education, found that education exports continued to grow in 2024. The results of this survey indicate that, despite geopolitical instability, interest in Finnish expertise and education solutions is still on the rise.

Education Finland members have seen a steady growth in their turnover from education exports in recent years.

According to previous studies, the members' total turnover from education exports was EUR 646.5 million in 2021, EUR 773 million in 2022 and EUR 840 million in 2023.

In 2024, this figure reached EUR 885 million, an increase of 5.4% from the previous year. An increase from 2023 in their turnover was reported by 43% of the members.

A wide range of actors and activities

Education Finland members represent actors in fields of education ranging from early childhood education and care to higher education and courses and training for employees. The largest share of these companies work in teaching technology (16%) or education consultancy (17%). The members also include many universities of applied sciences and vocational institutions.

As in previous years, the most significant sector in terms of its turnover was publishing and learning content, whose total turnover accounted for around 80% of the total turnover of education exports.

While some education export companies already have an established foothold, the export business of a significant number of the actors remains relatively small in scale. An annual turnover of less than EUR 500,000 was reported by 63% of Education Finland members, whereas 41 member companies exceeded this figure.

Interest in Asia and Ukraine

The most interesting export countries mentioned in the responses were India, Central Europe and Vietnam. In particular, there is growing interest in joint degree programmes, digital learning solutions and recruiting students from Asia and Africa.

Interest in development cooperation projects and partnerships with international organisations and foundations were emphasised especially in the private sector.

Many Finnish education export actors would also like to be involved in the reconstruction of Ukraine: 52% of the members expressed an interest in participating in it, and 23% said they were already engaged in cooperation. Members would like to take part in Ukraine's reconstruction by offering, among other things, teacher education, IT services and early childhood education and care services. Examples of cooperation already launched include student mobility programmes for universities and vocational institutions, collaboration projects with NGOs, and offering learning materials and other learning solutions in Ukrainian.
