The goals set for Erasmus+ are achieved with the help of the Key Actions.

The Erasmus+ programme funds mobility projects and partnerships for cooperation. The actions in the programme have been grouped under three Key Actions.

The Erasmus+ Programme Guide presents the available funding and the actions by Key Action. Similarly, the application forms for the Erasmus+ programme in the application portal have mainly been organised by Key Action. Therefore, all parties participating in the project should know which Key Action the planned action is related to.

  • mobility of learners and staff provides individuals and groups with opportunities for learning experiences and/or gaining professional experience abroad
  • Youth Participation Activities support international initiatives organised by groups of young people and/or youth organisations with the aim of promoting the development of active citizenship of young people and increasing their awareness of the common values and fundamental rights in the EU
  • Erasmus+ Virtual Exchanges projects consist of online people-to-people activities that promote intercultural dialogue and soft skills development.

Partnerships for Cooperation

  • Cooperation Partnerships are aimed at providing organisations an opportunity to improve the quality of their activities and develop and strengthen their international cooperation networks. The duration of cooperation partnerships is longer, their funding higher and objectives more extensive than those of small-scale partnerships.

  • Small-scale partnerships make it easier for small organisations and newcomer organisations to enter the programme. Compared with the above-mentioned cooperation partnerships, the grant amounts awarded to the organisations are smaller, the activities of a shorter duration and the administrative requirements simpler.

Partnerships for Innovation

  • Alliances for innovation are alliances that support the strategic cooperation of the key players in higher education, vocational education and training, businesses and research. They promote innovation in education and training and the capacities to respond to the renewing needs of the labour markets.
  • Forward-looking projects foster innovation, creativity and participation, as well as social entrepreneurship in different fields of education and training, within sectors or across sectors and disciplines.

Partnerships for Excellence

  • Erasmus Mundus action comprises Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EMJM) and Erasmus Mundus Design Measures (EMDM). The action aims at fostering excellence and worldwide internationalisation of higher education institutions via jointly delivered Master's programmes.
  • The European Universities action supports deeper cooperation of the networks of educational institutions and the development of shared long-term strategies.
  • The Erasmus+ Teacher Academies action supports the development of teacher education in European cooperation. The networks promote multilingualism and cultural diversity, develop teacher training in accordance with the EU's educational policy priorities and advance the achievement of the goals of the European Education Area.
  • Capacity building projects promote cooperation with partner countries outside of Europe. The purpose of the capacity-building projects is to support the modernisation and internationalisation of the partner countries' organizations and education systems, to promote the sustainable well-being of youth organizations and young people, and to support sports and sports activities and policies as a means of promoting values in third countries not associated with the program.
  • The Not-for-profit European Sport Events action supports the preparation and organisation of sport events. The action also highlights the role of sport in the promotion of social inclusion, equal opportunities and health promotion

  • actions aimed at collecting information about education and training in the fields of youth and sport to support decision-making
  • actions that increase the transparency of skills and qualifications and facilitate their recognition and the transfer of credits
  • a dialogue with stakeholders to increase awareness of Europe
  • cooperation with international organisations to strengthen the effectiveness and added value of policies in the fields of education, training, youth and sport.

Jean Monnet Actions included in the Erasmus+ programme support teaching, learning, research, and discussion about the European Union across various educational sectors. 

Opportunities are available ranging from general education to vocational education and training (VET) and higher education.

Online platforms such as eTwinning, the Electronic Platform for Adult Learning in Europe (EPALE), the School Education Gateway, the European Youth Portal and Erasmus Virtual Exchanges offer virtual collaboration spaces, communities of practice and partner-finding databases for teachers, trainers, youth workers, decision-makers, young people and learners.
