In the Authorised Translator’s Examination, the examinees must demonstrate their language and translation skills in the examination languages, as well as the other competences required in the professional practice of an authorised translator.

General Information about the Registration

The Authorised Translator's Examination is organised once a year in November. The examination can be taken only in Finnish or Swedish. You can read more about the registration for the examination in our Finnish and Swedish websites.

 

In Finland, authorised translators are required to be able to work in at least one of the official languages of Finland (Finnish, Swedish or Sámi).

Therefore, the majority of the information regarding the authorised translator's examination as well as the detailed information about the registration for the examination are published only on our Finnish and Swedish websites.

In the Authorised Translator’s Examination, the examinees must demonstrate their language and translation skills in the examination languages, as well as the other competences required in the professional practice of an authorised translator.

One of the working languages of a translator authorised in Finland always is Finnish, Swedish or Sámi. Therefore, the translation excercises in the examination can only be carried out

  • from one of the official languages of Finland to a foreign language,
  • from a foreign language to one of the official languages of Finland, or
  • between the official languages of Finland.

You can only choose one source language and one target language for the examination. The Authorised Translator's Examination must be taken separately for multiple language pairs. The required skill level for both languages in the examination is C2 in the Common European Framework (CERF)  for language proficiency.

The required language and translation skills and the ability to practise as an authorised translator, the ways of demonstrating these skills, and the generic assessment criteria are defined in the qualification requirements of the examination.

When you have passed the Authorised Translator's Examination, you can apply for the authorisation from the Examination Board of Authorised Translators.
