Learning environments and defining them are key ways for ECEC and education providers to structure their activities. In the national core curricula, the definitions of learning environments are very multidimensional and activity-specific. They are defined as facilities and spaces that promote learning and are healthy, safe and accessible. Similarly, the concept of learning environment is used for communities, practices, and equipment and supplies through which learning and interaction take place and are realised.
In general upper secondary education and VET, learning environments are even more extensive. For example, teaching in upper secondary education can diversely take advantage of distance and online learning alongside other learning environments. In VET, workplaces also play a central role in the development of students’ competence.
The ecological, economic, social and cultural dimensions of sustainable development can be implemented and concretised in many different ways and by using different solutions in a manner that is suitable for the local conditions. Well-working learning environments promote sustainable development with all its dimensions and educational quality.
