The purpose of ethical principles for artificial intelligence in education is to support the realisation of the conditions for human-centred and good learning in the use of AI. Ethics guide the critical and open identification, monitoring and assessment of the value judgements associated with the application of AI. The values of the Finnish education system, such as equality and non-discrimination, should form the basis for the application of AI and support the growth and moral judgement of learners. Understanding of AI as a phenomenon and its impact on learning, society and the environment should be ensured during the education path. The integration of AI into the infrastructure of our education system will gradually increase while AI applications continue to develop rapidly, reforming the way we use technology. The risks arising particularly from increased utilisation of generative AI must be managed in education.
In the education sector, interpretations of ethics are supported through a culture of open discussion and inclusion. Encouraging discussion on ethics can lay the foundation for a thriving working community and sustainable AI literacy. Policies on the use of AI should be formulated utilising ethical principles. In addition to technology providers, decision-makers and the academic world, it is also important for teachers, learners and their guardians to participate in the discussion on the ethics of AI technology, meaning the aim to achieve good. Practical pedagogical value judgements and assessment of the long-term impacts of AI are based on common core values. During the education path, learners must be able to trust the education system, in transparent information and the realisation of their own agency and autonomy.
