9 950, i.e. 18% of the applicants, offered admission in the autumn joint application to higher education institutions
The results of the autumn joint application have been published. The joint application included programmes starting in January 2024.
55,420 applicants participated in the joint application, of whom 9 950, or 18%, were offered admission. There were 9 750 applicants to the universities of applied sciences and 200 applicants to the universities.
Most of the programmes offered in the autumn joint application were provided by universities of applied sciences: 20 universities of applied sciences and five universities were involved. Of the study options, 295 were to universities of applied sciences and 27 to universities. 96 % of the applicants applied to universities of applied sciences, 2% applied to both, and 2% applied to universities alone.
There were a record number of applicants in the autumn joint application. The rise in the number of applicants is particularly explained by the increase in programmes offered in English.
‘There were ca. 12 500 more applicants than last autumn. Rising numbers of international applicants in English-taught programmes explain the fast growth in numbers over the last two years,’ says Senior Specialist Topias Kähärä from the Finnish National Agency for Education.
More than half offered admission in their preferred programme
Of the students that so far were offered a study place, 66% gained admission to their first programme of choice. Of those who applied to universities of applied sciences, 66% were accepted to their first programme of choice, and of the applicants to universities 95%. On average, applicants set 2.6 study options on the application form. In the autumn joint application, one can apply for six programmes.
43,350 applicants applied for programmes leading to a bachelor's or bachelor's degree and a master's degree. Of them, 8 090 was accepted as a student. Moreover 19%, i.e. 1 860 applicants, were admitted to programmes leading to a master's degree. The number of applicants for these programmes was 14,280.
