Erasmus+ enriches lives and opens minds! Since 1992, more than 300,000 Finns have completed periods abroad with support from Erasmus+ and the programmes preceding it. Erasmus+ has enabled students, teachers, young people, youth workers and other participants to improve their international competence and vocational skills. Educational institutions and organisations have exchanged good practices, developed joint study modules, created new operating models and methods, developed the practices of youth work, and promoted European sports policy in cooperation with their international partners.

Erasmus+ programme period 2021-2027

  • The current Erasmus+ programme runs from 2021 to 2027.
  • The budget of Erasmus+ at the European level is EUR 26 billion. This means that the budget for the 7-year programme period will be almost double the amount of the previous one.
  • In Finland, EDUFI supports internationalisation and the development of education, training and youth activities through the Erasmus+ programme to the amount of about EUR 50-60 million every year. The funding distributed annually increases towards the end of the programme period.

  • In Finland, funding was awarded to 150,000 participants for completing periods abroad. 
  • The budget of Erasmus+ at the European level was EUR 15 billion.
  • The Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI), the National Agency for Erasmus+ in Finland, allocated Erasmus+ project funding to the amount of EUR 240 million. This funding has been used to develop education, training and activities in the field of youth in wide international cooperation.
  • Finnish organisations have coordinated more than 1,000 strategic partnerships enabling international cooperation within the programme and have also been involved in a large number of projects coordinated by others.
  • In addition, Finnish organisations have received Erasmus+ funding from application rounds organised by the European Commission directly and have used it to participate in a number of other project activities within Erasmus+.

The Erasmus+ programme funds different mobility projects and partnerships for cooperation. Mobility projects provide learners with opportunities for learning experiences and/or gaining vocational experience abroad. For staff, mobility periods enable professional development, networking opportunities and exchange of good practices. Different partnerships for cooperation can be used to develop curricula, plan joint degree programmes and develop policies in the fields of education, training and youth. Read the project stories and explore the wide variety of projects!

We have compiled the projects that received funding under Erasmus+ between 2014 and 2020 on a separate website, where the data on the projects is available in a visualised form. You can search for the projects by theme, region, action, etc. In the visualisations, you will find the projects completed in all education and training sectors, i.e.in early childhood education and care, comprehensive schools and general upper secondary education, vocational education and training, higher education and adult education, and all projects in the field of youth.

Diverse international cooperation and mobility periods have enabled participants to improve their international competence and cooperation skills. The periods abroad have given them abilities to operate in an increasingly international world, both in Finland and abroad. Well-planned cooperation offers opportunities to diversify and deepen one’s vocational skills and to reflect on one’s operating practices. In addition, the programme has also offered opportunities for internationalisation at home to those who have not completed a period abroad themselves. As a whole, participation in the programme has strengthened European identity and promoted active citizenship. 

The periods abroad Erasmus+ offers to teachers for their professional development provide Finnish educational institutions with concrete tools for the development of schoolwork.

For institutions and organisations, Erasmus+ offers an opportunity to develop their activities in cooperation with international partners. In practice, this has been done by adopting a good practice in one's own organisation, by developing new methods in cooperation with project partners or by creating joint study modules, among other things. Staff have also improved their competence and expanded their networks through the projects. Organisations can share their special expertise internationally with other actors in their field and also learn more themselves at the same time. At best, Erasmus+ projects promote the organisations' strategic goals and the implementation of the national core curricula in the everyday work of schools and educational institutions.

My self-confidence increased when I realized that I could cope in different situations in everyday life and in the workplace.

In a world that is becoming increasingly international, multicultural and digital, Erasmus+ offers diverse opportunities for empowerment, and learning new skills and advancing them. In the future, more and more opportunities will also be offered to vulnerable groups.

Doing things together with organisations from different countries has been at the centre of the work carried out in the projects: exchanging good practices, improving the participants’ expertise, developing new working methods and solving common challenges.

International project work is one way to enhance the activities in the organisation and to find and develop new practices. Cooperation offers new perspectives in the changing global operating environment. Those who participate in international cooperation also learn to see their own strengths and development areas. Diversely and strategically planned international cooperation has increased the attractiveness and quality of many organisations and educational institutions.

Participants have learned to value different cultures during their stay abroad, they can adapt to new situations better, their self-confidence and tolerance have increased, and they have become more open-minded and more curious about new things.

  • define the desired changes to be achieved through the project
  • select appropriate measures and the necessary resources to achieve the objectives of the project
  • monitor the implementation of the project and ensure that the selected activities contribute to the objectives of the project
